It’s been seven years since China last hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit — and this time, it’s the biggest one yet. Leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations gathered in Tianjin to discuss new ways of working together on global governance and regional cooperation. So, what are the key takeaways from the summit?

First, Global Governance.

At the "SCO Plus" meeting, China proposed the Global Governance Initiative with five principles: adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating the people-centered approach, and focusing on taking real actions.

Amid a complex and shifting international landscape, the SCO—representing nearly half the world’s population and one-quarter of global GDP—not only reshapes regional governance but also plays an active role in reforming and improving global governance systems, which is crucial for global development.

Second, Economic and Trade Cooperation.

From busy logistics corridors to dynamic border demonstration zones and a thriving digital economy, economic ties between China and other SCO member states are steadily deepening.According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, trade with SCO members reached about USD 512.4 billion in 2024, a 2.7% year-on-year increase. These encouraging figures are only the beginning. Guided by the "Shanghai Spirit", SCO economic cooperation will continue to grow in depth and influence, injecting lasting stability into the global economy.

Third, Sustainable Development.

Expanded cooperation in green energy is creating new momentum for regional integration and sustainable growth. Looking ahead, China will establish three major platforms for China-SCO cooperation in energy, green industry, and the digital economy, and will set up three major cooperation centers for scientific and technological innovation, higher education, and vocational and technical education. China will work with fellow SCO countries to increase the installed capacity of  and wind power by 10 million kilowatts each over the next five years.

From the Huangpu River in Shanghai to the Haihe River in Tianjin, and from six founding members to 26 participants today, the SCO has grown into the world’s largest regional organization by area and population — and it’s now moving beyond border security to take on a bigger role in global governance.
