Hengqin, once a remote coastal island of banana groves and green fields, never ceases to amaze us. Leveraging its proximity to Macao - just a bridge away - It has transformed into a development hotspot, emerging as yet another dynamic growth pole of the Greater Bay Area.

On September 5, the release of the "Master Plan for Building the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin" marked the beginning of Hengqin's fast-track development journey. In its three years of rapid progress towards the vision of "Hengqin-Macao Integration," the compact size of the area was able to unleash immense potential. In the first half of 2024, The zone's GDP reached 24.99 billion yuan, up 6.1% year-on-year.

The mutual promotion between the "Four New" industries in the cooperation zone and Macao's "1+4" diversified development strategy highlights a new chapter in the diversified development of Macao's economy. By the end of 2023, it housed over 16,000 enterprises across "Four New" industries. In the first half of 2024, these industries contributed 11.78 billion yuan in added value, accounting for 47.1% of the GDP.

As an high-tech intensive manufacturing sector, the integrated circuit industry shows great potential, providing a fast track for the transformation of innovation achievements in the industry. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with the implementation of the "Macao registration + Hengqin production" mechanism, is also exploring new opportunities.

Joint-operating models like "one exhibition, two venues" and "one festival, two spots" have become the new norm for exhibitions in Hengqin and Macao. The launch of "multiple stops in one journey" traveling routes effortlessly links Hengqin and Macao's tourism resources.

Meanwhile, the cooperation zone's financial sector continues to innovate. The "30 Articles of Hengqin Finance" and multi-functional free trade accounts demonstrate new financial support pathways for the Greater Bay Area's development.

In addition, the new Macao University campus construction and the establishment of key university laboratory branches complete the "Macao R&D + Hengqin Transformation" industrial chain, promoting diverse industrial development in Hengqin and Macao.

The key to high-quality development lies in successful solution seeking and weak link improving. By combining enhancements in infrastructure, and "soft connectivity" in systems and mechanisms, more high-quality talents and valuable assets are attracted to the cooperation zone. 

In terms of hard connectivity of infrastructure, the "Guangdong-Macao integrated one-stop" customs clearance model has improved Hengqin Port's efficiency by 40%. The port's passenger flow exceeded 10 million in just half a year, ranking at the forefront nationwide.

Regarding soft connectivity, the cooperation zone has initiated new moves: the "Double 15%" tax benefit has attracted an influx of high-level talents, and cross-border practice certificates help professionals access new career path in the zone. The cross-border dispute resolution mechanism provides efficient, convenient, and economical solutions.

As Hengqin-Macao connections strengthen, more Macao investment and Macao enterprises are drawn to pursue opportunities in Hengqin. The cooperation zone seems destined to become a startup incubation paradise for Macao's youth.

With work life improving, living arrangements have also become more convenient. The "Macao New Neighborhood" project has completed 4,000 residential units, to make more Macao residents feel at home.

The Greater Bay Area has witnessed countless "Hengqin Miracles". In the in-depth cooperation zone, a more integrated and inclusive lifestyle has been made possible. Yet there's more to expect from Hengqin's grand transformation, so let's be the witness of the next miracle.
